Subject: Strong Objection to Article by Reema Nagrajan
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to express my strongest objection to the article authored by Reema Nagrajan, recently published in The Times of India. While it may be worthwhile to highlight the weak implementation of existing legal provisions and the inability of the system to address the concerns of nurses and other paramedical staff, to do so at a time when the entire medical fraternity is united in seeking justice for “Nirbhaya 2.0” is surely uncalled for. The article, in my humble opinion, not only attempts to dilute the gravity of the doctors’ protest against the brutal rape and murder of a medical student but also seems to be an unwarranted attempt to malign the image of doctors in general.
Moreover, her remarks about alleged violence against patients in labor rooms are not only out of context but also far removed from reality. It is almost comical to suggest that the actions taken by doctors to stimulate patients for a normal delivery could be construed as violence. Such a characterization is not only inaccurate but also shows a profound misunderstanding of medical procedures and the challenges faced by healthcare providers during childbirth. To classify these medical room occurrences as violence lacks both motive and execution. What does Ms. Nagrajan know about medical procedures? A few hearsay stories from vindictive patients do not make her a subject expert.
As a member of the medical community and a concerned citizen, I urge The Times of India to exercise greater editorial responsibility. The media has every right to critique and analyze, but it also has a duty to present a balanced and accurate portrayal of sensitive issues like this. I request that you consider publishing a more nuanced piece that accurately reflects the nature of the doctors’ protest and the reasons behind it.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your prompt response and action.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Shishir Srivastav
